Big Box Retailers: Is Walmart or Lowes and Home Depot Your Best Choice for Landscape Edging?

Big Box Retailers: Is Walmart or Lowes and Home Depot Your Best Choice for Landscape Edging?

A landscape isn’t complete until you have landscape edging to sharpen the whole look and even increase the value of your property.  Landscape edging also allows you to have a crisp landscape with less maintenance.

Like most Americans, we want to spend our spare time enjoying all that life has to offer, rather than picking weeds and constantly maintaining the border of a non-edged garden bed or other hardscape. The good news is that landscape edging  can be accomplished by using some sort of technique or material to define garden beds and other hardscape areas of your lawn that is more durable and will last longer.

Some common landscape edging materials can include wood, stone, brick, concrete, plastic, metal, fencing, and much more.

Luckily, there are dedicated companies that have simplified what is needed for a proper landscape edging job by creating edging products with fairly simple installations that are sold by many distributors.

Is Walmart landscape edging appropriate for your lawn or bed? Are Lowes and Home Depot your best choice for landscape edging?

Sure, your local hardware stores are sure to carry an edging product or even multiple landscape edging options.

But how will you know exactly which store to buy from for your products? Or exactly which landscape product you product to invest in and that will best serve your needs and meet your desires?

Research should be done to fit your needs, as well as wants, when it comes to your landscape edging. All the while keeping a budget in mind that you will need to set for yourself.

Walmart Landscape Edging Products, Lowes Landscape Edging & Home Depot Landscape Edging

Landscape Edging Products at Lowes and Home Depot

Lowes and Home Depot are very similar home-improvement stores that will certainly carry landscape edging products. You might even find something that fits the idea you have for your landscape edging in your head. You may ask yourself, “Is there really a difference between the two stores? Or the products you will find there over what you might find elsewhere?”

Any landscape edging products you will find at Lowes or Home Depot are likely to be very similar. They are the top two home-improvement stores in the U.S. Interesting to note.. Home Depot’s set up within their store is aimed more towards an audience of professional consumers, such as contractors. On the other hand, Lowe’s tends to target a more do-it-yourself crowd and has been in business about 30 years longer than Home Depot. Yet, they both have about 2,200 stores nationwide. Home Depot and Lowes both have a price match policy that guarantees they will “beat” the competitors’ price by 10%. However, keep in mind this only applies to products they actually carry. And while Home Depot probably has a greater variety of landscape edging options, it can be more expensive. But if Lowe’s happens to carry the same product for a lower price, Home Depot WILL (usually) give you that same price.

Landscape Edging Options at Walmart

Walmart is the store of all stores. They literally have anything you could need, right? They may have it all, but it may not be the best store to purchase landscape edging materials from. They do offer a variety of edging materials, including plastic, rubber, stone, wooden, and fencing. The prices of these materials range from about $6 to about $100, so they may be able to cover whatever your budget may be. More than likely, however, these materials will not be as sturdy as you were hoping for and may not last as long. But if that is a risk you’re willing to take and just need a sort-of-temporary option, then Walmart may be the store for your landscaping needs.

Grass Barrier and Edge Right Products

All of this taken into consideration… if you are looking for landscaping edging products that are long-lasting, durable, and affordable, we might have just the solution for you.

We offer two specific, proprietary, landscape edging products. Each serves a slightly different need and desired look and budget. But we stand behind our products and we believe they will consistently outperform what you might find in the big box stores.

Grass Barrier

Grass Barrier is a one of a kind landscape edging kit that is made of HDPE (high-density polyethylene plastic. HDPE is a very versatile plastic that can be used for much more other than a landscape edging material, such as hard hats and house wraps. This plastic can also be recycled into containers and even bags. It is today’s most widely used type of plastic. It’s very light weight, yet super strong. Furthermore, it is long lasting and weather resistant, resisting mold, mildew, and rotting.

With these properties, HDPE plastic can last over 100 years underground. Furthermore, it is known for its malleability, meaning it is easily bent to cover curves and turns.

Grass Barrier keeps grass and roots from intruding your flower beds. It is about 10 inches tall and relatively thin. The top portion serves to create a definitive line to hold back your flower bed’s mulch, gravel, or soil, while the lower portion stops grass roots from sneaking into your beds. We recommend burying it about 6 inches, leaving about 4 inches above ground to prevent even the most aggressive grass from intruding underneath the Grass Barrier.

Another pro to this product is that it can withstand a beating from the weed eater. It may reduce the overall appearance of the top 4 inches, but will not affect the overall effectiveness of keeping intruders out.

Edge RightEdge Right - Pack of 3

Edge Right is a landscape edging barrier product made from thick, heavy-duty, COR-TEN steel. Don’t let the name fool you, even though this steel landscape edging barrier is technically a metal landscape edging product, it has an increased resistance to atmospheric corrosion when compared to others. COR-TEN steel also has a natural oxidized finish after enduring the weather for several years, making it also known as weathering steel. The oxidation that is formed over the metal even allows the steel to be able to resist the corrosive effects of rain, snow, ice, and other conditions. That protective coat of oxidation also gives it a trendy, rustic look and also slows the rate of future corrosion, allowing it to last a lifetime.

Edge Right is a one-of-a-kind product with sharp teeth that easily penetrate the ground with the help of a rubber hammer or mallet. It goes deep into the ground, keeping grass from invading your flower beds and allowing you to use your free time enjoying the weekends rather than picking weeds. Being made of thick steel, you may be under the impression that Edge Right will not accommodate to curves along your flower bed. However, it effectively curves—even at this thickness. This product is also not damaged by a weed eater. The only effect you may see is some of the oxidation being scratched away, which will be replaced by new oxidation.

Overall, both of these products we offer are sure to get the job done right with easy installation. These may seem a tad more expensive than the landscape edging at Walmart or Lowe’s or Home Depot, but it is well worth every penny. Our products are a “do it once, do it right” deal. Depending on how much area you are covering, you could spend as little as $30 or as much as $285 for a bundle. Walmart offers products that are more of a “get what you pay for” deal, so why not invest one time and never have to stress about your landscape edging again?

Our Other Landscape Edging Competitors

Trex Landscape Edging

Trex is known for its durability and flexibility. These properties are attainable because it is made up of 95% recycled material, including reclaimed wood and sawdust as well as recycled plastic. Trex is often compared to wood because it is made up of recycled wood scraps, but the incorporated plastic and engineering has made this product much different than natural, or even treated wood.

Other than wood being exceptionally cheaper, Trex resists rotting, staining, and cracking. It is very low maintenance and can be occasionally cleaned with soap-water solution. Trex can be curved to fit the border of your garden. The cons of Trex can be pretty significant to some DIY-ers though. It is often best installed by a professional, which can be pricey. And the cost is on the high-end too. Trex ranges from $11-$15 per square foot, depending on where it is purchased and how much is being purchased.

EZ Connect Landscape Edging: Pros and Cons

EZ Connect is rather “easy” to install. This product doesn’t require a certain skill level, nor does it require digging. You just position and anchor the pieces. The individual pieces snap together for a unified look. Although, after reading some reviews, customers have said that they are rather difficult to snap together and snapping these pieces together is the hardest part of installation.

The kit includes unique spiral spikes that fit through predrilled holes to serve as anchors, preventing movement after installation. Consumer reviews have also stated that it may be a good idea to have spare spikes to use if the original spikes pop out of the ground.  This product is inexpensive at about $19 for a 16-foot kit.

If you are looking for a short-term, simple, DIY landscape edging product that is fairly inexpensive, this may be the product for you. If you are wanting something a little more durable, sturdy, and long-term – that has a higher quality look – you probably want to consider a different product for your landscape edging needs.
