Surface-level Cor-Ten stops erosion on terrace steps

March 8, 2026Shared by Tanya

Tanya tackled erosion and weeds on a terraced back slope with railroad tie steps by repurposing our 4 inch Cor-Ten hammer-in edging at surface level. She fastened 4 ft strips to posts and ties with flat washers so the edging could sit on the concrete footing, then backfilled the gaps with rock and gravel. The quick DIY install will patina to blend in and has kept soil and gravel in place, with planters planned next to soften a new deck.

I used Edgeright products in a rather unconventional way, but they solved my problem! We had some simple steps and terraces built on our back slope and needed to retain soil and prevent weeds from growing where the terrace walls meet grade. And keep soil from eroding under the railroad tie steps. Your 4' surface level edging fit the bill! It needed to sit on top of concrete footing so the deeper ones with feet wouldn't work. I used flat washers to attach the edging to the posts and railroad tie steps. We'll backfill the gaps along the wall with rock and gravel to discourage them from becoming little planters. If we lose that battle, we'll fill them with hens and chicks to embrace the situation! While not quite Sunset Magazine worthy, the steel and washers will rust and blend in quickly. The whole project took a couple of hours and just required a level, a drill, some bolts and washers. Here are some before and after pics. Happy to provide more if they'd be useful. Looking forward to trying some of your planters to define and soften the edge of a new deck we're building this summer!
