DIY Front Yard Zoysia Control With Cor-Ten Edging

March 28, 2026Shared by Wayne

Wayne used two 5-packs of 48-inch, 6-inch depth Cor-Ten hammer-in edging to stop Zoysia from invading two front-yard planting beds. After learning that his hard red clay needed prep, he cut a groove with a lawn edger and shovel, then trimmed sections with an angle grinder and fitted connector clips for a smooth install. The result is strong, clean, curved borders that keep mulch in place and the lawn out.

We have two plant beds where our Zoysia lawn was always aggressively encroaching and getting into the plantings. We wanted to keep the lawn out of our plant beds, so I purchased Qty 2 of Edge Right - Hammer-in Landscape Edging - 48-inch Strips - 6-inch Depth 1/4-inch Rounded top COR-Ten Steel (5 Pack) from Amazon. They arrived quickly, on schedule, and in great condition. I jumped right in, formed the strips into the proper curves, and then immediately started trying to pound them into the ground. Error on my part! We have very hard red clay soil, and I wasn’t making much progress just pounding away. I quickly discovered that the ground needed a bit of preparation before pounding-in the strips. Be sure to read all of the instructions first. After I read the instructions, I got out my lawn edger and cut a little groove into the dirt, creating a path for the metal edging to fit into. I also used a narrow metal shovel to make the groove in the very hard dirt even deeper. After creating the groove, I re-started pounding the strips into the ground. Success! Following the instructions works great. As the instructions recommend, I used my angle grinder to cut the strips to the proper length, which worked nicely. An angle grinder is a simple and quick solution to cutting these high-quality metal strips. The angle grinder will also let you adjust the metal rolled edge lip to permit the “strip connector clips” to fit properly. If you don’t already have an angle grinder, this is a great opportunity to get one! You don’t need a fancy or expensive one, something from one of the discount imported tool stores (think Harbor Freight or Northern Tool) will be sufficient. I’m really happy with the quality and strength of these metal edging strips. They’re well made, using strong materials. The product was accurately described, packaged and delivered in great shape. The installation process was simple once I actually read the instructions. In the attached photos, the Zoysia lawn is brown, which is entirely normal for March. It greens up once the ground temperature consistently gets into the mid-70s, and is then very draught resistant throughout the hot months of the year. Highly recommended.
