The tree rings worked for my planters, I try cement blocks and the plastic rings but the weeds still got out of control around my trees, as you can see from photos before and after, hopefully the mulch will keep weeds down and the edge rings will separate rocks from mulch The rings were hard to install as I have very rocky soil and also the roots from trees were at ground level So I was able to put into ground about 1/2” to 1” with mulch and rocks keeping them in place

Steel Tree Rings Tame Weeds in Rocky Soil
Doug replaced plastic and cement borders with Edge Right Tree Ring Kits to control weeds around his planters. The 2.5-foot diameter, 6-inch high, 16 gauge steel rings now separate mulch from river rock for a cleaner look. Installation was challenging in rocky soil with shallow roots, so he set the rings 0.5 to 1 inch deep with mulch and rock holding them in place.
